The top category

The top level category of Template Wiki's category system is on the wiki's front page. You should be able to browse the whole site from there. Subcategories should assist with navigation of the wiki. Every wiki page should be in a category, and will often be appropriate in more than one. Every category should be a subcategory of at least one higher category. Extension:CategoryTree

The wiki has the Category Tree extension enabled, seen here on the right. Rob Kam (talk) 07:51, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

Wanted templates

In case you'd like particular templates to be added to those already available, if you can't import them yourself please list them here. N.B. Currently (Feb 2018) Miraheze backend issues are preventing imports.

Done :-) except {{Infobox Wikipedia user}} is now {{Infobox Miraheze user}}. --Rob Kam (talk) 17:19, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
  • {{Support}} (and related voting templates), might be useful on other wikis. Reception123 (talk) 18:38, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Then please import these. --Rob Kam (talk) 19:14, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Yes to categorising templates, somebody just has to be bold and go for it. Also which ones are primary and which ones are only supporting? --Rob Kam (talk) 21:20, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Rob Kam, he hecho dos propuestas de categorías. Espero comentarios, si tienes alguna propuesta puedes agregarlo en mi sandbox. Wiki1776 (talk) 22:18, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Those are fine but I'd categorise by function. Anyhow there can be more than one scheme. --Rob Kam (talk) 23:40, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Ah, bueno. Solo sería agregar también esas categorías, ver Proposal 3 Wiki1776 (talk) 01:33, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
{{Support}} (and related voting templates) are now included. --Rob Kam (talk) 23:40, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
Could {{Infobox settlement}} and {{Infobox information appliance}} be added too? EzekielT (talk) 22:33, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
Done. Rob Kam (talk) 19:32, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Extension:MobileFrontend instead of scary transclusion?

By the way mw:Extension:MobileFrontend has Testing with articles on a foreign wiki (live data):

"MobileFrontend can now be configured locally to render articles from other MediaWiki instances. This can help you debug problems locally instead of importing articles which may have dependencies on various templates and Wikibase identifiers from production to your local instance. This is not recommended for production usage.

The code below will turn your local MediaWiki mobile site into a Wikivoyage viewer:

$wgMFContentProviderClass = 'MobileFrontend\ContentProviders\MwApiContentProvider';
$wgMFMwApiContentProviderBaseUri = 'https://en.m.wikivoyage.org/w/api.php';

This is particularly useful for testing different mobile skins using the wgMFDefaultSkinClass config option."

I have noticed the "This is not recommended for production usage." and suspect this would be regarded as a security risk on Miraheze.

There's a demo on YouTube at How to pull content from remote wikis in your local MediaWiki instance.

Interwiki transclusion needs fixing

Interwiki transclusion needs fixing, e.g. for infobox, while interwiki transcluded templates with local modules function properly, those without local modules don't. (See Maniphest T2697) Rob Kam (talk) 07:53, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

How do you use these templates?

I read Miraheze_Template_Wiki#How_to_use_this_wiki but I don't understand what I'm supposed to do with these templates.

If I use {{raw:templatewiki:merge from|Article title}}, I get 'Script error: No such module "Unsubst".'

Am I supposed to copy or import the templates from templatewiki into my wiki? Psephomancy (talk) 04:34, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

You should export templates from Template wiki and then import these into your wiki. Interwiki transcluding would be better for keeping your templates up to date but unfortunately it is still broken. Rob Kam (talk) 07:13, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
@Rob Kam Ok, thanks. I see that Special:Import has a "Import from another wiki" option that includes templatewiki.
  1. I should use "Import to default locations" to keep them in the Template namespace?
  2. Which of these options should I check?
    • Copy all history revisions for this page
    • Include all templates (imports dependencies as well?)
    • Assign edits to local users where the named user exists locally (aren't users already shared between my wiki and templatewiki?)
  3. Is there an advantage to exporting from https://template.miraheze.org/wiki/Template:Reflist vs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Reflist? Psephomancy (talk) 19:52, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
I use Upload XML data, I've not yet figured out what Import from another wiki is.
Leaving Import to default locations checked seems to work fine.
Because of attribution requirements I used to include all the history of every template but that way the XML file quickly becomes huge and unwieldy. I'd recommend leaving out the history and just put a footer on each page pointing to the history on the source wiki, e.g. at {{Bang}}.
Yes, check Include all templates, templates transclude other templates, etc. also don't forget to check the MediaWiki:Common.css page for any styling used by the templates.
Yes do assign edits to local users. Most of the templates are from Wikipedia so that doesn't really apply on Miraheze anyway.
While Template wiki is under construction (currently stalled) there's little advantage using the templates here over those on Wikipedia. The templates here are meant to be more universal, but they aren't yet. Ideally Miraheze wikis wouldn't have templates referring the users to various Wikipedia/Mediawiki pages. See Customising templates, but that's maybe 2000 templates here that need refining. -- Rob Kam (talk) 22:29, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. You should post that on the Stack Exchange question. Psephomancy (talk) 23:07, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Avoiding categorization

Hello.

I have created two neccesary templates for my wiki. And they are working fine but I have a small problem. Everytime I add a template to an article, this article is authomatically categorized as an Infobox template. how can I avoid these and not adding incorrect categories to every article that uses them?

Thanks.

Juan Panfilo (talk) 01:18, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Stuff for the template itself goes between <includeonly> and </includeonly> anything else goes between the <noinclude> and </noinclude> such as [[Category:Infobox templates]] should to fix this. --Rob Kam (talk) 22:21, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

Navbox collapsing help

I just imported a Navbox template to a wiki I launched, and apparently, my one doesn't have a collapse option. I tried importing one from another wiki, to no avail. Is there an easy way to make my wiki's Navbox collapsible? Cheers. - ManiacACS (talk) 17:45, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

You also need to copy the parts needed from MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css --Rob Kam (talk) 22:32, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

Language template help

My wiki project has another template problem. I'm trying to integrate a language template to the wiki, and all I get is "Lua error in Module:Unicode_data at line 15: attempt to call field 'length' (a nil value).". Several other templates on the wiki apparently have that same unresolvable problem. Is there a way to fix Lua errors? Thanks. ManiacACS (talk) 10:23, 19 October 2019 (UTC)

This isn't the place to ask about problems with imported templates on other wikis. Try asking at the Miraheze Community noticeboard. --Rob Kam (talk) 12:16, 19 October 2019 (UTC)

Withdrawal of permits

Hello, I request that these permissions be removed from my user account: autopatrolled, confirmed, rollbacker. Greetings. Hispano76 (talk) 22:49, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Title blacklist

I was trying to move Template:Wikipedia-adnavbox to Template:Miraheze ads/navbox to (a) remove inappropriate Wikipedia-isms and (b) make it a subpage, since the identical change happened on Wikipedia a while ago, and was stopped by the title blacklist. Could an admin (a) make that move for me, and (b) consider blanking or deleting MediaWiki:Titleblacklist, since it seems to consist primarily of English-Wikipedia-specific content. Pppery (talk) 22:09, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

Done and much thanks for all the work you're putting in here. Ps. You might want to consider using AutoWikiBrowser (AWB) or Javascript Wiki Browser (JWB). --Rob Kam (talk) 09:12, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
I don't generally like using automated tools for edits I make. Pppery (talk) 13:25, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
I use them sometimes but have also discovered how much havoc they can cause. --Rob Kam (talk) 12:50, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
Also, automated tools, even if they worked, wouldn't help much, since they would only fix the simple Wikipedia-isms while leaving the more complicated ones alone. Pppery (talk) 03:28, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Request for new translationadmin group and user rights changes to the rollbacker group

We have quite a few active translators, some of whom are also translation administrators, on Meta, and I expect many are eager to extend their translation work to Miraheze Template Wiki and Miraheze Commons—whether it be to essential templates or the documentation pages on each of those wikis. So, I'm wondering if any bureaucrat could create a translationadmin group consistent with the following user rights that MacFan4000 set up on Miraheze Commons following my request on IRC?

  • Change page language (pagelang)
  • Change workflow state of message groups (translate-groupreview)
  • Delete pages (delete)
  • Edit using the translate interface (translate)
  • Import offline translations (translate-import)
  • Manage message groups (translate-manage)
  • Mark versions of pages for translation (pagetranslation)
  • Review translations (translate-messagereview)

The delete user right is somewhat unique for this user group, but the use case here is that it could be useful for translation administrators, which I recommend continuing to be able to be added by administrators to trusted users upon request, to better manage the translated subpages (i.e., deleting poor or long unmaintained translations, for example).

Similarly, for rollbacker, if we could also add the following user right, which would be useful for reverting blatant page move vandalism or good-faith but ill-conceived or undiscussed page moves?

  • Not create redirects from source pages when moving pages (suppressredirect)

Thanks,

Request for autopatrolled, interface-admin, rollbacker, and translationadmin

Assuming the translationadmin user group is added by any bureaucrat, I am a local administrator on Meta, a consul on Public Test Wiki, and a global interwiki administrator, which generally command most of time and volunteerism. Nevertheless, during lulls in activity on those wikis and helping users on Discord, I like to WikiGnome on our smaller, sister wikis, which, of course, include Miraheze Commons and Miraheze Template Wiki (namely fixing or otherwise resolving broken redirects, double redirects, orphaned talk pages, as applicable). As well, as I do monitor the individual IRC wiki RC feeds, I revert blatant vandalism. Near term, I would also like to assist in setting up certain gadgets and interface messages locally on Miraheze Template Wiki. So, I'm wondering if any bureaucrat and administrator, as applicable, could add the following flags to my Template Wiki user account:

  1. autopatrolled
  2. interface-admin
  3. rollbacker
  4. translationadmin

Thanks,

Request for autopatrolled and translationadmin for Raltseye

In this log action on Meta, I have granted translation administrator to Raltseye, one of Meta's most active and experienced translators, following his requesting the user group. He is also eager to assist with both translations and translation page administrator on Miraheze Template Wiki and Miraheze Commons. As well, he has had a Miraheze account since around 2018 and is also autopatrolled on Meta. As such, he has additionally requested translationadmin on both of those wikis, to which I am also requesting autopatrolled for him. I will update him (likely on Meta) on the relatively minor/nuanced differences between autopatrolled and translationadmin on Meta versus Miraheze Template Wiki and Miraheze Commons. Thanks. Request for autopatrolled for R4356th

Similar to my request for Raltseye above, in this log action on Meta, I granted him autopatrolled, mainly as he helps out with translations and answering questions on community noticeboard and on Discord. Autopatrolled users on Meta don't have the patrol user right, whereas on Miraheze Template Wiki they do, but he is also the co-founder of Snap! Wiki and is an experienced programmer. Thus, I have no doubt this user group will be helpful for him donating his time developing and improving templates. Thanks. Dmehus (talk) 06:12, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Requesting bureaucrat and administrator on Miraheze Template Wiki

I thought I would be able to make do with autopatrolled and translationadmin in terms of my RecentChanges and NewPages patrolling, but, unfortunately, I would need to request many more user rights be added to either user group, so I'm requesting bureaucrat and administrator on Miraheze Template Wiki. I am active on Miraheze Template Wiki, mainly relating to patrolling, counter-vandalism reversion, WikiGnoming, and documentation page creation and editing in project namespace. In addition, I'm an administrator on Meta Wiki and a bureaucrat and an administrator on Miraheze Template Wiki's companion wiki, Miraheze Developers Wiki. Thanks. Moving Template:Thomas.H1/sandbox/doc‎ to User:Thomas.H1/sandbox/doc

Hi,

I have trying to move this page into this page as the user was probally want to create a doc for this sandbox. But, for not know reason, I can't not doing it because Title blacklist is restrict me. Can a sysop take care about this ? Thanks HeartsDo (talk) 19:20, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

(PS: I am now autoconfirmed on this wiki, it would be good if you can remove me confirmed group on my account, thanks! :) )

The page was moved by MacFan4000, and I've removed confirmed from your account. Pppery (talk) 00:59, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

Wordmark

I propose that we use the following as our new wordmark. What does people think?

MacFan4000 (Talk Contribs) 22:44, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

The official name of the wiki is Miraheze Template Wiki, which is a bit long. Do we need a wordmark? For this wiki, I was thinking we could just have the space in New Vector allocated for the wordmark be whitespace. Dmehus (talk) 22:47, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

Expand scope

This may be a bit much (and I believe approval of this should not require anyone to actually start doing, just have the opportunity), but I believe in addition to this semi-official method of distributing templates, there should be scope for quasi-official guides to template setup and operation not bound to particular templates offered on this wiki. These can be approved in essay form as 'the right way' is discretionary, but allows there to be a good vehicle for observations like, 'you need to know what you're doing to just import wikipedia templates' and suggesting a consistent scheme of organization for people building them up with categories and documentation. If this is already possible, then I'd ask for this to be officially reflected in the scope of the main page, particularly the 'how to use this wiki' section and allowing for a category structure/reference page that can distribute these written works and be offered to newer users seeking to learn more. Just an idea. --Raidarr (talk) 11:23, 4 November 2021 (UTC)

Agreed that these should be within scope. That said, you need to know what you're doing to just import wikipedia templates is definitely true; in fact the majority of this wiki consists of one person blindly importing lots of templates from Wikipedia and creating a mess that I've been slowly cleaning up. Pppery (talk) 01:06, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
I concur with Pppery as well that template creation help guides are already in scope of Miraheze Template Wiki. Pppery's done good work with cleaning up the mass import of Wikipedia-specific templates, whether by de-Wikipedia-ifying them or deleting them where they're just too Wikipedia-specific (say templates related to the Wikipedia Teahouse or something like that). So any template creation help guides should include some sort of essay or other explanation that notes that point. Dmehus (talk) 16:22, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
That is, on the rare occasions I feel motivated enough to do something. I've been inactive for the last few months because I've become convinced that cleaning up this wiki to the point that it's something other than a low-quality Wikipedia mirror is far beyond my abilities working alone. Pppery (talk) 22:24, 8 November 2021 (UTC)

Requesting bureaucrat and administrator as well

I believe I can be of great help here de-Wikipedia-fying templates, as well as importing templates that could help in wikis' maintenance and in the wikis I edit in, such as the {{Non-free ...}} templates and political election-related ones... MLastCelebration (talk) 04:11, 21 December 2021 (UTC)

MLastCelebration, thank you for the request. Looking through your contributions here, though I see some effort being made in this area, note that de-Wikipedia-ifying templates doesn't just mean removing the word "Wikipedia" from templates. It means converting wikilinks to interwiki wikilinks, so they're not broken, removing complexity from templates and modules, and going through our templates and modules to remove templates that serve no likely purpose on Miraheze. Given that, I'm inclined to mark this as not done, but would be willing to grant you autopatrolled permissions indefinitely and temporary importer permissions, if you can outline/articulate a clearer purpose on what you intend to do. Dmehus (talk) 03:18, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

"Starter pack"

I'd suggest this be added, per mh:meta:Community Wishlist for 2022/"Templates" for newly created wikis. Anpang (talk) 03:04, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

Anpang I believe this is a great idea. What would you suggest would be the best way to approach this? I would suggest creating a page like New wiki template starter pack, then provide brief listings with annotations for each template included therein. You would also want to add, say, Category:New wiki starter templates, or something like that to any templates included within the "starter pack." We probably have most of the suggested templates already, but if you require importer rights, let me know, and I'll add the flag. Dmehus (talk) 03:10, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
Why are there so many proposals for more work to be done and so few people willing to do the pre-existing work? The above rant aside, this seems like a reasonable idea. Pppery (talk) 02:06, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

How do

Whenever I imported one of this wiki's templates into my personal wiki, it sent me to a create page. How do I get the template to work? What should I put in the page to create it? The Triple Trouble Collective (talk) 18:13, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
